Common Refrigerant Choices
While R-290 use as a commercial refrigerant in food retail applications is fairly new in the U.S., it has been successfully and widely used across Europe for over 20 years.
WHAT ROLE WILL YOU TAKE?
It’s important for every food retailer to be knowledgeable about the future of refrigeration to help with protecting our environment and reducing the use of refrigerants that produce greenhouse gases which contribute to depleting of the ozone layer. We all have a responsibility as food retailers, manufacturers, and as individuals to do our part to “be kind” to the environment.
THE NEXT WAVE FOR SELF-CONTAINED!
The “smart choice” with the next wave for self-contained refrigerated display cases is choosing R-290 (also known as hydrocarbon or HC) refrigerant. Natural refrigerants such as R-290 are some of the cleanest and environmentally friendly options. R-290 has zero ozone depletion and a global warming potential of just three. In contrast, a common refrigerant such as R-404A has a GWP of nearly four-thousand. That’s a 99% difference between R-290 vs. a standard HFC refrigerant! R-290 also has an excellent thermodynamic performance; it is energy-efficient allowing for a 20-50% reduction in energy usage compared to an HFC unit, and it’s a very reliable refrigerant.
WHAT’S HOLDING YOU BACK?
Yes, some may have concerns with R-290 being flammable, however, it is regulated and strictly limited by the government and worldwide agencies. Don’t let the flammability scare you. Remember, the refrigerant charges in the U.S. are quite small and it is always important, when working on a refrigerated case with R-290 or any type of refrigerant, to hire a certified refrigeration technician, to hire a certified refrigeration technician, assuring proper safety and care are taken when dealing with an R-290 system. It doesn’t matter where you are in the world, HFC refrigerants are fading out and natural refrigerants are here to stay. Be kind to the environment and make the smart choice.
